Weekly Update August 26
I was reminded this week that pain can be a good thing. James 1:2-4 says: "Dear brothers and sisters when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing."
Pain in our lives is good when it causes us to look to Jesus and the hope we have of spending eternity worshipping God. Likewise, pain in our children's lives can often be a good thing. Not only does pain teach them to deal with difficult circumstances in life, but it can also remind them (by God's grace and our parenting) that this world is broken and they need Jesus.
There is nothing on the calendar for this Wednesday. Enjoy spending time with your families!
This Sunday we will officially start our "Family Worship Class" on the New City Catechism at 10am. This week we will be studying Question 1: What is our only hope in life and death? The answer is: That we are not our own but belong to God. You can find the New City Catechism here. You can also download the New City Catechism app on your phone.
This Sunday night at Refuge Hangout we will be finishing our study of Acts with Acts 28. Acts 28 finishes out the nearly 30-year saga of Acts on a high note: Paul, by God’s grace, was able to carry out two years of faithful ministry in the great city of Rome. Despite the troublesome circumstances surrounding his entry and reputation with the Romans, God proved Himself faithful and demonstrated the power of His gospel. It has been a great pleasure to work through the Book of Acts with our children and discover with them how God was faithful to the early church.
May the Lord bless and keep you and your family over the upcoming week,

Proverbs 13:24 says: "Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them." Might this verse also indicate that it is sometimes good to step back when our children are experiencing pain or discomfort, rather than swooping in and fixing the problem, so that pain might have its full sanctifying effect in their lives?
