Pastor Matt's Weekly Update
This month at Hyfi, our theme is Mission Possible, and we are so excited to learn about the truth, “I Am Meant to Know God.” We will learn about this truth by focusing on four different ways that God shows us Himself: through His world, His Word, His Son, and His people!
This week, we will look at Genesis 1-2 and Psalm 8 and remind kids how God created the entire world. When we see God's creation all around us, we can see how it reflects His creativity, His intentionality, His attention to detail, and how He designed everything to work together. One of the ways we can know who God is and what He’s like is through His creation.
Spend time this week celebrating all that God has made as a family. Go outside and marvel at His creation, talking about the special and amazing ways that God handcrafted our world. In the same way that God handcrafted our world, remember that He has handcrafted each and every one of us!
This Wednesday at Refuge Students we will be studying 1 John 2:12-17. 1 John 2:15 says: "do not love the world or the things in the world...if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." John is clear in this passage that men who love the world are not God's children. It is those who love God and obey him that are truly His children. Speak with your students this week about what it means to love God and do His will. Answer the question, "how can we safeguard ourselves from loving the world more than God?" Remember that "the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever" (1 Jhn 2:17).
This week at Sunday School and Refuge Hangout we will be studying Acts 1:12-26. In this week’s session, we see the disciples united in prayer in Jerusalem, seeking God’s will. They saw a need to fill Judas’s role among them and trusted God to show them who it would be. Here are the key takeaways:
• Jesus’s disciples unite in prayer (Acts 1:12-14).
• Jesus’s disciples follow the Scriptures (Acts 1:15-22).
• Jesus’s disciples trust in God (Acts 1:23-26).
Take time to read Acts 1:12-26 as a family this week and ask these questions:• How does our family approach Scripture reading? Do we each read on our own? Do we have a time when we read Scripture together? What, if anything, about our habits needs to change?
• When have we prayed continually about something? What did that look like?
• How does our family typically make important decisions?
Finally, just a reminder that I have created a Google calendar to keep you up to date on our family ministry events. It can be found here. The biggest change to our upcoming calendar is that VBS will be happening June 16th-20th this year.
I hope everyone has a great week. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday!
